BETTER ME is a multifaceted duo project by Emil Kuyumcuyan and Vanessa Porter, moving freely between contemporary composition, electronic aesthetics, and performance. All works in this program were composed specifically by the two artists for this project, conceived as a coherent sonic universe in which precisely shaped structures coexist with open, spontaneous moments on equal footing.
At its core lies an expanded understanding of percussion in dialogue with electronics. Noise, friction, resonance, impulses, and decay are treated as musical parameters just as essential as pitch or rhythm. This approach gives rise to a wide-ranging sound world—at times archaic and raw, at others highly refined and fragile—constantly in motion and deliberately resistant to easy categorization. Electronics are not an added layer but an equal partner within the musical fabric.
A central feature of BETTER ME is the tension between control and freedom. Alongside clearly notated passages, the music opens up spaces in which improvisation becomes a formative principle. These moments are not decorative but invite decision-making in real time—embracing reaction, risk, and presence.
Although the project is often realized with video, lighting, and performative elements, this recording is conceived as an autonomous listening experience. It captures the friction between acoustic physicality and electronic surfaces, between composed architecture and improvised immediacy. The music invites close listening to detail while allowing larger gestures to unfold: processes of accumulation, rupture, opening, disappearance, and re-emergence.
The influences are diverse, yet they merge into a distinct musical language. Electronic music and IDM play a key role, as do repetitive and minimalist structures. The sonic palette ranges from jazz-inflected harmonies to rough dissonances.
Each piece within BETTER ME reveals a different facet of this spectrum, opening its own acoustic, emotional, and associative space.

BETTER ME ist ein vielschichtiges Duo-Projekt von Emil Kuyumcuyan und Vanessa Porter, das sich frei zwischen zeitgenössischer Komposition, elektronischer Ästhetik und Performance bewegt. Alle Stücke dieses Programms wurden eigens von den beiden Künstlern dafür geschrieben – als zusammenhängender Klangkosmos, in dem präzise gesetzte Strukturen und offene, spontane Momente gleichberechtigt nebeneinanderstehen.
Im Mittelpunkt steht ein erweitertes Verständnis von Perkussion in Verbindung mit Elektronik. Geräusche, Reibungen, Resonanzen, Impulse und Nachklänge sind dabei genauso wichtig wie Tonhöhe oder Rhythmus. So entsteht ein breites Klangspektrum: mal archaisch und direkt, mal hochdifferenziert und fragil, immer in Bewegung und bewusst schwer einzuordnen. Die Elektronik ist dabei kein Zusatz, sondern ein gleichwertiger musikalischer Partner.
Ein zentrales Element von BETTER ME ist das Spiel mit Kontrolle und Freiheit. Neben klar auskomponierten Passagen gibt es offene Felder, in denen Improvisation zum formenden Prinzip wird. Diese Momente geben Raum für Entscheidungen im Augenblick – für Reaktion, Risiko und Präsenz.
Auch wenn das Projekt häufig mit Video, Licht und performativen Elementen verbunden ist, versteht sich diese CD als eigenständige Hörspur. Sie hält die Spannung zwischen akustischer Körperlichkeit und elektronischer Oberfläche fest, zwischen komponierter Architektur und improvisierter Gegenwart. Die Musik lädt dazu ein, sich in Details zu verlieren und gleichzeitig große Bewegungen wahrzunehmen: Verdichtungen, Brüche, Öffnungen, Verschwinden und Wiederauftauchen.
Die Einflüsse sind vielfältig, doch es entsteht eine eigene Sprache. Elektronische Musik und IDM spielen eine ebenso wichtige Rolle wie repetitive, minimalistische Strukturen. Das Klangbild reicht von jazznahen Harmonien bis zu rauen Dissonanzen.
Die einzelnen Stücke von BETTER ME beleuchten unterschiedliche Facetten dieses klanglichen Spektrums und öffnen jeweils eigene Räume – akustisch, emotional und assoziativ.
